Family-friendly cycling tour with play areas, obstacle course and art. Also discover Varde Miniby and Otto Frello
This family-friendly cycling route offers fun and adventure for both kids and adults. Along the way, you’ll find chances to explore the old amusement park area “Varde Sommerland”, now transformed into an active outdoor space featuring the Home of the Giants, the Valley of the Little People, obstacle courses, and picnic areas. You can also visit Varde Miniature Town or dive into the magical and imaginative world of Otto Frello’s paintings.
Route Overview
The route begins at the parking area where you’ll first cross a bridge over the Varde River to Sommerlandet, a 12-hectare nature area that offers great opportunities for activities for the whole family to enjoy. From there you can also visit Varde Miniature Town, a detailed replica of historic Varde buildings in miniature.
The route then continues along the Varde River, before turning left on a loop through central Varde. Keep an eye out for large murals scattered around town - and you won’t miss the Otto Frello Museum, where two impressive gable paintings inspired by Otto Frello’s works decorate the building’s walls.
As you cycle through Varde’s charming centre, you can also visit the historic Sct. Jacobi Church, or take a break to explore shops and local eateries.
On the return journey, the route once again crosses the Varde River. Along the way, near Torvegade and Storegade, you’ll find interactive water play areas where children can engage with the river in fun, educational ways.
Finally, the route leads back to the starting point.

Route Highlights
The area is the former home of the Varde Sommerland amusement park and had been neglected for ten years before a group of volunteers began clearing up and developing the site.
Despite the fact that the size ratio of Varde Miniby is 1:10, you will still have a great experience with a visit. The more than 300 buildings are listed as faithful copies of the houses from Varde around the year 1860.
Experience Museum Frello in Varde - an exhibition where Otto Frello's marvelous paintings are displayed along with a selection of the museum's many objects.
