Along the way, you can also visit a beautiful and enchanting oasis called Tambours Have, home to fascinating plants from around the world, and cycle across Nørholms Hede near the town of Sig.
Route Overview
The route starts at the parking lot near Karlsgårde hydroelectricpower Plant, by Karlsgårde Lake, northeast of Varde.
Karlsgårde Lake was created in connection with the power plant, which originally dates back to 1921 and was expanded during World War II. Before the plant could be built and water directed into the lake. Today, the plant is powered by water from Holme Å and Varde Å, which are channelled through a 17 km canal system into the lake.
At the power plant, you’ll find a small exhibition about the site's history and the surrounding nature. A 6 km marked hiking trail (known as “Hjertesti” or “Heart Path”) circles the lake, offering a mix of original and rewilded landscapes.
The cycle route continues north around the lake. Along the way, you can take a detour to Tambours Garden - the legacy of tailor Tambour, who passionately collected exotic plants from around the world. The garden is a unique destination with themed areas, a large and atmospheric orangery, and a cosy café.
From here, the route follows Regional Cycle Route 8 toward Ansager. In Ansager, you can stop for refreshments at the local Dagli'Brugsen grocery store. Shortly before reaching the town, the route turns off toward the Stemmeværkspladsen, a small, scenic natural spot along the Varde River—perfect for a break or picnic.
The final part of the route follows the Varde River through Hodde, where you can enjoy a meal at Hodde Inn or visit Hodde Old School, offering a glimpse into what school life was like 150 years ago.
From here, the route continues across Nørholm Hede, past the Nørholm Estate, and includes a short detour to Nørholm’s former watermill. The route then leads through the town of Sig, passing the protected Sig Kapelbanke, a historic site once home to a chapel, burial ground, and sacred spring—before returning to the starting point at Karlsgårde Hydropower Plant.
